Far right ideas abound in Europe
The Peninsula Newspaper
Wednesday, 02 May 2012 00:17
We should recognise that the rise of the extreme right trend in Europe was not in response to Christian fundamentalism and its demands to play a greater role, or to Judaism and its support to Zionist settlement projects even when they were against Western interests, or to the so-called yellow and red danger in the East and South Asia and its religions such as Hinduism, Sikhism and Buddhism. It has come in response to future fears and concerns in the light of the growing presence of Islamic, Arab and Gulf populations in European communities.
(1) Regardless of the French election campaign and results, the rise of the extreme right and its agenda welcomed by many European countries today was remarkable. The Opinion poll published by the French newspaper “Le Monde”, noted that a large segment of French youth aged between 18 and 24 years, tend to back the extreme right during the 2012 French elections. The opinion poll said that the new generation in France backs Marine Le Pen more than other candidates Francois Hollande, the Socialist candidate, and President Nicolas Sarkozy, the so-called friend of Arabs and Muslims. Marine Le Pen, the woman candidate of the extreme right got record votes and the newspaper “Le Liberation” said “the extreme right has never been so powerful in France”. She is a lawyer of 43 years, and the youngest daughter of the founder of the right wing party National Front, Jean-Marie Le Pen who decided to accomplish the 40 years process of struggle launched by him which had been full of scandals, racism, and hostility towards immigrants and Muslims of France. His most favourite slogan during his election campaign was “France for the French people only”. Marine Le Pen believes that Islam is growing and threatens every household in France. “Fighting Islamic expansion in France or what so-called Islamisation of France is not shameful. War against Islam must continue and not interrupted at all”, she said. Marine Le Pen also criticised Muslims for they forced the French people, foreign tourists, including one million Japanese, to eat meat slaughtered according to Islamic law, describing the halal meat as epidemic diet.
She called the French government “not to involve religion in French food” and supported the president’s ban on the hijab and veil. She also called to stop building mosques, ban the worshipers to pray in the squares near the mosques, ban immigration, saying that she does not recognise any French achievements made by immigrant French people. Zinedine Zidane of Algerian origin is not a French citizen, wondering how a person, who ignores the words of France’s national anthem, can play in the national football team!
(2) Many Western mass media have severely criticised the recently grown Saudi, Kuwaiti, UAE and Qatari investments, in the aftermath of the collapse of many world economies especially American and European ones since 2008. These Gulf investments had pumped a lot of liquidity in the sluggish European economy and invested in defaulted institutions and companies or on the verge of bankruptcy. The French foreign trade with the Arab countries during the past year mounted to146.365bn French francs. The GCC share was 37.793bn francs, 81.059bn francs with the Maghreb countries, and 27.511bn francs with other Arab countries.
However, Arab investments in Paris and its suburbs were most remarkable.
Relationship with Qatar, welcomed at time when Paris used to search for alternatives to develop its economy, has turned to vitriol and cheap method of attack against Qatar. Qatar, which had the lion’s share in the French press reports which hailed Qatar’s bold steps to support the French economy and change of the stereotypical image of Arabs and Muslims, had become prone to defamation and muttering campaigns.
The French papers headline differed in colours and contents such as: Qatar buys Paris football team, Qatar, a key partner in Lagardère group of Media and Sport and Aviation, Qatar, a key shareholder of the French oil company Total, Qatar has a large share in the group of companies LVMH “Louis Vuitton Samoens Hennessy,” Qatar invests in the French energy market and real estate, Al Jazeera satellite channel gets the largest share of the rights to broadcast the European Champions League matches, Qatar buys hotels in Paris and acquires historic palaces, Qatar involves in political deals and French politicians flock to Doha.
The article of Le Libération imagined that most of the future of the French state in 2022 will be owned by Qatar. The website of “Mediabar” said in an article entitled “sale of France and Europe to Qatar.”
(3) During the past years many right-wing parties with extreme right-wing trends become popular and succeeded in getting the votes in large numbers in many countries from Sweden to Hungary, Austria to the Netherlands and now France, tomorrow Britain.
Their popularity will not decline and will increase as it focus to target other party as politically, economically, culturally, demographic burden, because they cannot integrate into the European model. The Arab and Islamic countries and specifically the Gulf countries which seek to support their economy are accused of having political and ideological agenda. The speech of such people is able to create fear of (Islamophobia and Arabphobia and the new term of Gulfphobia) and re-produce the elements that believe in hatred and hostility, which may carry out terrorist acts to achieve their goals and slogans.
Anders Bering Brievik, who killed 77 people in Norway last year and exploded a bomb in the center of Oslo, confirmed in his trial carried directly in international mass media, the existence of sleeper cells that could strike Europe any time.
These cells are composed of individual cells that work separately and aim to “unite all national activists in Europe” and train them to follow Al Qaeda and Islamic jihadists. Brievik holds “satanic socialist democrats and intellectual Marxists who want to turn their country into a multicultural society without consulting the people” responsible for that.

Arab-Iranian relations hit further
The peninsula Newspaper
Wednesday, 25 April 2012 04:50
The Iranian President paid a provocative visit to the island of Abu Musa occupied by Iran since 1971. The 20 sqm island is located 60km from the city of Sharjah. Arab states immediately condemned the visit and the GCC states sent a message of protest to the United Nations condemning the visit as “a blatant violation of the principles of the UN Charter and international law and flagrant violation of the sovereignty of an Arab state. The message accused the visit of disregarding all peace initiatives and efforts made by the UAE and other GCC countries in order to find a just and lasting settlement to end the Iranian occupation of the three islands through peaceful means. Tehran, in turn, had escalated the situation. The Chairman of the Committee on National Security and Foreign Policy of the Council of the Islamic Shura said “the allegations of the UAE on the island of Abu Musa are “flimsy” for this region is part of Iranian territory” calling to discuss cutting diplomatic relations with UAE.
Another Iranian official called UAE officials to submit an apology to Iran and not to follow the path of Zionism. He threatened saying that Iran today is much stronger than what it was before and will destroy any potential aggression against it! An Iranian tourism company announced organisation of cruises to the three islands.
These recurrent extreme and hostile statements undermine all diplomatic efforts being made to resolve the islands’ issue through direct negotiations or resorting to the International Court of Justice. The move also internationalises the internal political crisis and conflict for on power after the former Iranian President Ali Akbar Hashemi Rafsanjani calling Iran to establish better relations with the Gulf States and Saudi Arabia and start a dialogue with the United States. Rafsanjani said, “If we have good relations with Saudi Arabia the West could not impose oil sanctions on us.” Rafsanjani declared that “it is possible to establish good relations with Riyadh” criticising those who make such “radical” statements against Saudi Arabia without considering the consequences.
The relations between Rafsanjani and Ahmadinejad have been tense since the latter launched in 2009 an unprecedented attack through the state television on Rafsanjani accusing him and members of his family of financial corruption and looting the wealth of the country. The jailing of Rafsanjani’s daughter for 6 months was approved for she said that Iran is run by “the foolish and fallen people.”
The seminar held in the Institute of International Affairs in London, in which a group of specialists in Iranian affairs discussed and focused on the theme of the Islamic Republic of Iran’s current situation and whether the regime is strong or weak in the light of the recent developments that took place in the region and the continuing international sanctions on Tehran. Dr Ali Ansari, director of the Institute of Iranian Studies at the Britain-based University of St Andrews said that the most important political development in the Iranian regime today is the growing role of Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei and the surrounding group and the influence of the former Iranian President Hashemi Rafsanjani on this group after assuming the presidency of one of the councils that facilitate the work of the Supreme Leader and the state
in general.
Al Ansari said most of the political, economic and security issues have significant links to religious and ideological views.
Dr Shahram Chobin of (Carnegie) Institute specialised in security and nuclear affairs noted that the international sanctions have had negative impact on the Iranian economy and the cost of oil sanctions has been to the tune of $50bn.
They had increased the security threats against the Iranian regime, but did not affect the morale of the revolution. Iran still has good relations with Hezbollah and Hamas and it still shows its military power in the region generally: Yemen, Syria, Bahrain and Sudan. Dr Hassan Hakimian, director of Middle East Institute at the College (SOAS), University of London, said it is wrong to believe that Iran is on the verge of falling into an abyss due to the sanctions, threats and developments resulting from the Arab spring. He also noted the lack of accurate statistics on the economic situation in the country and of the impact of economic sanctions, saying there is a pressing need for more transparency in this regard. “Everything can take place in Iran. Unexpected surprises can take place suddenly as it happened when the Arab spring took place,” he said.
The relationship between Tehran and the Arab states is further worsening and complicating… there is the nuclear file, hostile statements and stand towards the Gulf states in Saudi Arabia, the southern regions and Kuwait, the crisis with Bahrain, escalation with the UAE and the violation of its sovereignty, the Iranian official direct political, military and media support to the sectarian oppressive regime in Syria, its opposition to the revolution of the Syrian people, despite the statements of Iranian officials supporting the Arab revolutions, armament of Houthis in Yemen and attempt to divide it, negative role and blatant interventions carried out by Teheran in Iraq by supporting sectarian militia and controlling the political decision and the liquidation of opponents and dissidents.
Iran encourages sectarian split in Beirut and even the Arab countries of the Arab Maghreb and Sudan had become scene of negative Iranian interference and export of arms and religious ideology.
When will Iran take more interest in its internal affairs and recognise its problems and solve them. There are 14 million poor people in Iran, drug abuse in primary, intermediate, and secondary schools, institutes and universities is growing. The Iranian people spend $18bn directly or indirectly on opium.

The Levant, I beg your pardon
The Peninsula Nespaper

The split in views on the situation in Syria is expanding rather than unifying. Despite the clear position of Saudi Arabia and Qatar condemning the Syrian regime and their call to support and arm the opposition, some Arab and GCC countries led by Iraq support the situation in Syria and ignore the daily scene of murder and destruction.
(1) The situation in Syria is further becoming complex and hard to find acceptable settlements. Neither the international stands including the recent mission led by Kofi Annan the joint UN envoy, nor the movements and initiatives led by the mission of the Arab League can stop the violence. The Syrian regime which is politically supported by international, regional and Arab parties and financially and militarily, by Iran, Iraq and Russia and China veto, persists to commit murder and bloodshed relentlessly. It’s really a big holocaust against the Syrian people who protested calling for freedom and democracy and termination of tyranny and dictatorship of Assad and his family, which reflects the success of the Arab Mafia to have an access to power and control the Syrian people.
The people who came out in the streets seeking change were facing more than half an armed million military and security soldiers and thugs of the regime who did not have any qualms about killing women, children and elderly peoples and crushing everyone who came out to street in front of the eyes of the world. Why the Syrian regime was not internally toppled as it happened in Tunisia and Egypt or internally and externally as it was the case in Libya? The British newspaper “The Times” reported that Bashar Al Assad had benefited from the mistakes of the divided Syrian opposition and the confused international stands. With respect to the armed resistance, the opposition Free Army is formed of dissidents who lack weapons and unified leadership, and the Syrian demonstrators became confused and unable to engage in armed confrontation against the ruling regime for it had succeeded in militarizing the uprising.
The Syrian regime succeeded in dividing the opposition, some of them vaguely demand political reform and others raises the slogan of ending the ruling of Al Assad family while the third party refused to end the uprising without completely changing the regime and not only toppling the Assad family. As a result, President Al Assad succeeded in exploiting the opposition division and placing what called “submarines” or the agents of the regime inside the opposition. They used to pretend as opponents of Al-Assad and abuse the regime. The international stand towards Al Assad regime is one of the factors that contributed in surviving the regime for one year in spite of the demands calling
Al Assad to go.
(2) The international positions towards the situation in Syria are mysterious and vague for lack of genuine resources in Syria that push the international community to fight in favour of them such as oil and gas to pay the military intervention bill, as in Kuwait, Iraq and Libya. The report of “The Times” daily points that the US position towards Syria is vague though Washington had supported Arab revolutions. The US President Barack Obama said “Assad has to go”, but he did not specify where to go. With the exception of Iran, Assad has no other place to go as the case of Colonel Gaddafi. Therefore Al Assad he did not find any way except to fight and destroy the cities such as Homs, Hama and Idlib and following the policy of “scorched earth.” The mistakes of president Obama stemmed from the mistakes of the United Nations that had failed able to provide a coherent position, and the Annan plan to adopt a cease-fire and settle the crisis ended by turning the issue into a “human crisis” based on maintenance of the status quo and allowing the experts and relief workers to provide subsidies to the affected areas. One of the mistakes of the United Nations and Washington was the failure to understand the Russian demands and allay its concerns regarding its military base in Tartus. The analysis also suggests that Moscow concerns of the US and Brotherhood Alliance, as the Islamists now control Tunisia, Egypt, Morocco and Libya. Russia’s position is based on the support provided by the Islamists to the war in Chechnya.
(3) The regime in Syria targets mediapersons. We have seen the brave reporters who risked their lives to report the real scene inside Syria became victims of violence. However, the role played by the Arab media: Al Arabia , Al Jazeera, BBC Arabic and the western media have failed to cope with the role played in other Arab countries. The social networking sites did not play the same role and got divided between supporters, opponents of the Syrian regime and most of them remained as spectator without real participation and interaction!.
The “Daily Telegraph” reported that the Syrian Revolution failed to resist or change the ruling regime through social networks as was the case of the popular revolts in Tunisia and Egypt. It is true that social networking websites Facebook and podcast made the Syria issue alive and the terrible scenes of violence on YouTube and TVs made the Syria crisis topping the political discussions, stimulated the international diplomatic efforts and played the role of the professional mass media which their business were banned in Syria.
But these activities did not achieve the desired change as al-Assad is still controlling the political game. The daily telegraph saw the overthrow of a fierce and skilled regime requires the Syrian uprising to search for more tools than Twitter, video, SMS and discussions on the Internet. The uprising needs a central organisation that could work internally and plan to overthrow the regime. The Syrians should rely only on the social networking websites and return to the traditional mean of guerilla war that toppled the dictatorial regimes. The strategy of the Algerian National Liberation Movement based on the independent cells (3 individuals in each cell), where the Liberation Army was capable to close the Algerian capital and carry out the quality operations and organize a general strike. The strategy had complicated the task of the French intelligence that failed to dismantle a single cell composed of the leader and two other peoples.
In the Syrian case, the absence of a semi-Algerian organization makes the Syrian resistance incapable to achieve its goals. Depending on the social networking sites will give the Syrian intelligence the opportunity to detect the names, plans and contact points of the internal resistance elements. On the other hand, even the modern technology has facilitated the communications, but it can be easily used against the opposition elements through creating delusive activists, stealing names and websites and spreading false information. Hence, the social networking sites which are contrary to the guerilla war, If they had existed in the fifties of the last century, the French colonial rule would have lasted for a decade or two in Algeria.
The so called (green revolution) in Iran which took place to oppose the falsified elections in 2009 based on collective communication means is a good example of the spontaneous popular revolution where the Iranian intelligence agents had succeeded in detecting arresting the its leaders. The army backing of the popular revolution and the reluctance of the dictator regime to use force against the uprising are the sole cases where social networking means succeeded in achieving political change.
(4) Is there anything we can do about the situation in Syria where the massacres outperform those done by the Israeli occupation in Palestine, Sinai and the Golan? Will we continue to watch the scenes of daily killings and destruction in Syria through the news channels and the Internet? Do the Arab governments really have nothing to do and their people only know wailing, crying on the ruins?

Muslim Brotherhood in the Gulf
The Peninsula Newspaper
Wednesday, 11 April 2012 03:57
The Statements of Dubai’s police chief accusing the Muslim Brotherhood of conspiring against the Gulf States in order to access to power saying they will start by dominating Kuwait in 2013 and other Gulf States in 2016, had raised many reactions in the political, media and public circles.
These statements have marked the beginning of an open confrontation where the political movements that carry religious trends in their programmes and agenda (like Muslim Brotherhood and Salafi trend) have come to power in countries where the repressive regimes were changed and controlled the legislative and executive powers.
(1) The clear mention of Muslim Brotherhood in the Gulf, especially in Kuwait, in the statement above had triggered various pro and anti reactions and criticisms. The Member of Parliament Jamaan Al Herbish, one of the most prominent MPs of Islamic Constitutional Movement (Hadas) that represents the Muslim Brotherhood in Kuwait questioned the Kuwaiti foreign and internal ministers about those statements calling the Kuwaiti government to clarify its position, taking into consideration that according to Dubai’s police chief that information was based on reports by Western intelligence.
In a newspaper article, Mubarak Duwailah, former MP for the Muslim Brotherhood in the Kuwaiti National Assembly, pointed out that the political programme of the Muslim Brotherhood in the Gulf is based on political, economic, social and judicial reforms. He said, “This issue is well known to everyone. We look to make reforms through the applicable legal and constitutional bodies in the Gulf States.”
Duwailah denied that the Brotherhood’s political draft aims to have access to power in the Gulf region, saying: “Those who talk about this scenario do not know the ABC of the Muslim Brotherhood’s policy and ignore the private characteristic of the Gulf States based on good and respected relationship between the ruler and the public.
Duwailah confirmed that the Gulf society did not comment on the reports saying Muslim Brotherhood’s plan to have access to power in the region because he knows that they are false. He said: “Those reports did not trigger reactions in the Gulf region because they are baseless as our goal lies in only reforms. Renowned Islamic preacher Aaiz Al Qarni had fiercely attacked those statements saying they serve third party (they are Arab parties) that response to the promoted conspiracy theory by linking it to other conspiracy…Iran, remnants of the previous Egyptian regimes and Israeli Mossad”, according to “Al Ahram gate” website. The Israeli intelligence might support issuing such statements in order to cause a crisis in the Arabian Gulf to prevent the Western countries from providing assistance to the countries of the Arab spring.
(2) Is the fear from the Muslim Brotherhood movement justified more than the fear of the Salafis, Shia or Sunni movements or other political trends including liberalism and secularism? Can the Muslim Brotherhood control the Gulf States, change the regimes and dominate power as it did in other Arab countries? The studies and thorough scientific and academic reports about the size, diversity of the religious trend, its impact, agenda and spread based on figures and statistics in the Gulf countries are still limited and inaccurate and do not give a comprehensive and detailed view. With the exception of Qatar, where the group dissolved itself, the Muslim Brotherhood in the Gulf is still active and contributes on the scene and has supporters as well. Our colleague Abdul Aziz Al Mahmoud dealt with the security aspect of the decision to dissolve the Muslim Brotherhood in Qatar. He said that at the end of the nineties a group within the Muslim Brotherhood began to think seriously to dissolve the group and dismantle it. Though the Muslim Brotherhood was not organised as a known organisation, but the many concerned on the influence of the Muslim Brotherhood ideology on the group for fear of what might happen, especially as some governments in the Gulf States began a campaign to arrest young people influenced by the ideology of the Muslim Brotherhood and fired them from their jobs. That step was attributed to the presence of some Egyptian security officers, who were recruited as security advisers, and began to influence some Gulf leaders who used to accuse the Muslim Brotherhood, without evidence. Therefore, some people took the decision to revoke the group and dismantle it in 2003.
Dr Abdullah Al Nafisi in his article “the Islamic case in Qatar” dealt with the intellectual and theoretical aspects. He pointed out that in the middle of the eighties the serious questions began to rise within the group: Who are we? Where are we going? Have we a specific programme to carry out? Is this what we want? What is the community’s interest in this? Does the idea of (dogma) have consequences in the future? It is interesting to see that the group seriously dealt with these questions and firmness and delegated some of its members to study these questions in detail. After all this effort they decided in 1999 to dissolve the organisation and the (international body of the organisation) was informed about this resolution. Nafisi said that the experiment of the Brotherhood in Qatar was not (normal), for it was not controlled by Islamic passion , political utopia, (implementing regulations) or laws or formalities like the experience of the Muslim Brotherhood in the UAE or Kuwait or perhaps to some extent the experiments of Brotherhood in Saudi Arabia or Oman and Bahrain.
Many researchers said Muslim Brotherhood cannot dominate power in the Gulf in general and Kuwait in particular.
The Kuwaiti researcher and specialist in Islamic movements Khalil Haider Ali said constitution, democratic heritage, multiplicity of Islamic groups and religious diversity are the main obstacles for Muslim Brotherhood. Haider said, “The Muslim Brotherhood does not play the same role in all six Gulf countries. They play a secret opposition role in Oman, a balance force between urban and tribes and the non-confrontational opposition group in Kuwait, an isolated group between the Salafi and the Shias in Bahrain, a mixture of the political opposition and the Brotherhood trend in Saudi Arabia and in the UAE a movement that is trying to achieve some of the gains achieved by the Muslim Brotherhood in other places”.
Haider ruled out that Brotherhood as a group or party can have a control on Kuwait, Bahrain or Saudi Arabia and perhaps even others, because of the conservative and religious nature of these countries and their regimes, and the presence of the competitors such as Salafis and because of the level of income, education and societal openness. The Muslim Brotherhood even in the same country has different streams, wings, leaders and cultures……there is no similarity between the Syrian, Jordanian, Egyptian and Tunisian Muslim Brotherhood. The researcher explained that the problem of the Muslim Brotherhood lay in the fact that is that it is a political and cultural underground movement as they enter one phase and come out of the other without self-criticism or interpretation or explanation. The Muslim Brotherhood in Syria supported “socialism of Islam” while the Muslim Brotherhood in Egypt stood against it.
He said the future work of the Muslim Brotherhood in the Gulf region is not homogeneous due to the difference in the policy frameworks, margin of freedoms and the experience of these movements.
